Altar Servers

Serving the Lord with Gladness

Altar Server Ministry is for boys and girls of the parish in grades 5 - 12 and who have the desire to assist at the Altar of the Lord. Serving at the altar is a calling and like all ministries it is one to which you must remain dedicated. The altar server is a very important part of our liturgical celebrations providing support and assistance to the priest or deacon. when we become part of a ministry to serve God and His people, we make a commitment to serve at masses and other liturgical services for which we are scheduled. That schedule includes Saturday evening and Sunday Masses, special masses during the holy seasons of Advent and Lent, and other liturgical celebrations in the parish such as exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, stations of the cross, weddings and funerals. It is important to understand that as a minister for the church, you will be needed on a regular basis and are expected to make yourself available for this ministry above all other activities. If you are involved in other activities that will conflict with serving on a regular basis on either weekends or weekdays, you should think about serving God in some other ministry. Being able to be dependable is the number one consideration you must make before choosing this ministry.

The Server Ministry is a part of the Christian Worship Commission and is directed for the parish by Deacon Ron Brown and is coordinated by Mr. Brendan Heffron and Mr. Nate Brown.

Scheduling of altar servers is completed on a quarterly basis by Mrs. Barb Bierbauer. Server Workshops for experienced servers are held as needed but minimally once per year.

All Workshop sessions are in the Church unless otherwise noted.

If you are interested in joining the Server Ministry, click on this link, New Server Information and Scheduling sheet and email it to both of these addresses: barb_bierbauer@comcast.net and rbrown@sspeterandpaul.net . This is the official notification to the deacon and a return email will be sent confirming the receipt and the date of the next new server workshop.

Deacon Ron's Letter(2011-2012 update coming soon!) provides important information for the new server and the Altar Server Handbook outlines the proper serving techniques as well as other information that is critical for servers.

When you have completed your training and have been on the schedule for one quarter, you are to complete a Current Server Scheduling Form for each scheduling period as directed. Watch the bulletin for notice when the next new schedule will be coming out and when conflicts for the next schedule are needed..

All servers must be available to serve week day masses, there are no exceptions.  Please indicate on the Server Scheduling Form what day(s) and time(s) you are available to serve during the week and weekend masses.  If you do not fill out what masses you are available to serve during the week it will be assumed you are available for all days and mass times. It is important to note that you must be more available than less available.

If you wish to serve with siblings make sure that your information matches your sibling’s information.  If days differ on individual schedules, you will possibly be scheduled for days other than with your sibling. You may also indicate on the form if a parent or other family member is a Lector or Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and you would like to be scheduled with them. We make every effort to coordinate that, but it is not always possible.

Make sure to list any days you are not available on the Server Scheduling Form.  And remember that if you are unable to serve when you are scheduled, it is your responsibility to find a substitute server.
