Reflection on the Collects for Sunday Mass
This Advent, we
began using the new translation of the Roman Missal. In an attempt
to more fully draw out the richness of this new translation, each
week we will offer a
brief on-line recording reflecting on the Collect, or Opening Prayer at Mass.
Here are the recordings
for Advent:
The Collect, or Opening Prayer, is the prayer that concludes the Introductory Rites (when Father says
“Let us pray…”) and prepares us to listen to God’s Word in the Liturgy of the Word. Perhaps here more than any
other place in the Mass, the changes in the new translation stand out, and provide us with a treasure of our
spiritual heritage. Moreover, the Biblical allusions in the new translation come alive.
