Religious Liberties

Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network, or I-CAN:

I-CAN allows you to sign up for occasional e-mail updates from the Catholic Conference of Illinois (CCI). Catholic Conferences in other states are developing similar networks, as we recognize the need for more creative forms of engagement for the laity. I encourage all of you to sign up for these updates from the Illinois Catholic Conference. You can sign up online at http://www.ilcatholic.org/take-action/join-i-can/   If you are interested in signing up but do not have e-mail, please contact the parish office and we will supply you with a post card that you can use to sign up by mail.

Catholics, both as citizens and Church members, need to become more engaged with state and federal policies that affect the Church and her mission. The loss of state foster care and adoption contracts for Catholic Charities and the federal HHS mandate forcing insurance coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives and sterilizations highlight the need for Catholics to be informed about the Church’s role in the public square.

Catholics want a voice, especially when the government is increasingly encroaching on the mission and the operations of the Church. We need the enthusiastic participation of every Catholic in this important endeavor to challenge unconstitutional attacks on our religious freedom.

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty

O God our Creator,

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,
you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel
to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us
in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart
to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;
give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,
a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
gathered in your Church
in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood
and every danger overcome-
for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,
and all who come after us-
this great land will always be “one nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
