Letter Writing

Letter Writing in the Teen Zone - 2008/2009 Dates TBD -  There are so many people in our parish and in our world who are ill or unable to leave their homes. Join us to create cards and/or write cards & letters to them. We will also be writing to Service Men & Women this year.

S.A.L.T. (Service Action Leadership Team)

Purpose:

  • To serve others

  • To show leadership & love in words and actions

  • Evangelize by our Service Actions

  • Plan Service activities for parish teens

Teens who join this team work closely with Joanne and with Bill Johnson to plan and organize our service projects. We usually meet once a month. Call Joanne to join this group at 718-2131.

Help out at events at St. Patrick's Nursing Home - 2008/2009 Dates TBD

30 Hour Food Fast Project - March  6-7, 2009

Help raise money to fight world hunger and have fun too!

You will collect money $$ from sponsors and then spend 30 hours fasting at an overnight Lock-in. You will learn about world hunger problems through presentations, games and actual service to the community!

Fasting begins at 12:00 PM Friday after lunch and continues until 6 PM Saturday (water & juice allowed).

  • S.W.I.M. - Summer Witness in Mission - TBD Weeklong Service trip. Living in community and traveling throughout our area to serve the needs of those less fortunate. Call Joanne to sign up, 718-2131.

Special Event Volunteer Opportunities

  • Life Chain - Take a stand for LIFE! Join other Christians from the area at Naperville's Life Chain. Participants stand along the North side of Ogden Ave. and hold a pro-life sign while silently witnessing for the unborn. Signs distributed at the corner of Washington and Ogden before the event. Approximately 900 chains take place across the country on this date. Call Illinois Citizens for Life at 825-5448 for more info.

  • Luminary Mass at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery - Volunteers are needed the morning  to prepare and place luminaries starting at 9:30 AM in the cemetery. The setup takes about 2-21/2 hours, depending on the number of volunteers. Volunteers also needed the next day (Monday) for clean-up.

  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk - This is a cancer walk in downtown Chicago. All types of help needed. Please note the American Cancer Society is always looking for work on weekends and in their office Mar-April. Contact Susan Ward 932-1141.

  • March for Life - Travel to our nation's capital to let leaders, legislators and America know that you are for LIFE! The Joliet Diocese will sponsor buses for the youth to travel to Washington D.C. to take part in the annual March for Life in January. Information will be in the  the Joliet Diocesan Life Office here at SSPP

  • Spike Out Cancer Volleyball Marathon - annual volleyball tournament, usually held in April, involving coed teams who collect pledges; set up, too. Contact Susan Ward, 932-1141

  • MS Walk - volunteer to walk or help set up. Help is also needed with day of activities including registration, lunch, rest stop support, photography, and finish line festivities. Office help needed too. Contact: Volunteer Hotline 312-423-1101 or the website www.msillinois.org.

  • Christmas in April - this organization rehabilitates homes for low income elderly and handicapped people. SSPP Contact: Dee Huie 420-1814.

  • March of Dimes - Walk America - help pass out water, goodie bags, marking the route or walking. Also helping at the start and finish line. M of D website: www.marchofdimesillinois.org The Naperville Site Contact is Robin Wickey 312-596-4723 or rwickey@marchofdimes.com

  • Walk for the Whisper (ovarian cancer walk) - Begins at the Riverwalk. Help needed setting up, passing out water bottles, and walking. Contact: Luann Anderson 769-1664. Info also at www.ovarian.org (search for Illinois division)

  • National Assoc. of Letter Carriers Food Drive - This food drive is normally held the second Sunday of May. Loaves and Fishes needs your help to sort the food collected. Drivers are also needed. Volunteers can receive a certificate saying they volunteered in someones name. (Hint: this certificate makes a great Mother's Day gift if you volunteer in her name!!) Call before May.   • Relay for Life (Cancer) - Participate on a team, fill & set up luminaries, clean up. Relay for Life occurs at multiple sites throughout the area such as Naperville North H.S., Nequa Valley H.S., Benedictine University, North Central College and locations in Wheaton. Contact: Lauren Brandmeyer 932-1141.

  • Hoops for Life (American Cancer Society) - Annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament with over 225 teams and 100 sponsors. Held in Hinsdale. Set up, concession, registration and clean up. Contact: Susan Ward 932-1141.

  • River's Edge Triathlon (to aid ovarian cancer) - Hand out water and shirts, take off timing chips, guides along course. Call Capri Events volunteer hotline 773-404-7571 or go to www.reebokwomenstriathlon.com/river/volunteer.htm 

  • Muscular Dystrophy Summer Camp (Hudson, Illinois)- Volunteers 16 years and older are needed to work one-on-one with kids with MD for one week in July. You must apply for this position as camp counselor, and previous volunteer experience and references are needed. Application process begins in May. Contact the MD Office at 598-0700.

  • Great American Yard Sale - This year's event will be held August 18 & 19 on the NE corner of 1708 Jefferson and Forthill Dr. Help is needed setting up from 9 AM to 5 PM on August 13-17th. Just show up and sign in to volunteer. Questions? Call 369-0400 or go to www.greatamericanyardsale.com

  • Crohn's Walk - Help is need to set-up and hand out brochures and putting up brochures in the community. Walkers are always needed. Contact: Chris Cholewa (847) 827-0404.

  • S.T.E.P. - Steps Toward Elimination Poverty - This event/walk takes place at All Saints Catholic Academy - more details later.

Retreat Leaders Needed - This ministry occurs throughout the year. Retreat Leaders journey with 7th & 8th graders for Formation Days, and with high school teens overnights and 3-day retreats.

Promotes respect for all life.  Various opportunities to participate throughout the year.  Call Mary.  

 

Harvest Sunday - Joanne Kuttner        718- 2131

Teens in Quest groups distribute flyers on the first Sunday of November, and then return the following Sunday to pick up the food which is left out.  Sorting and boxing the food occurs at our parish.

Pastoral Ministry to Senior Citizens - Paulette Shea/Helen Kolar          718-2155

Teens can help the elderly with yard work, housework, shopping, general chores, snow shoveling.

Mrs. Shea knows those in need, and will act as liaison.  

 

St. Vincent de Paul - John Vest         961-3368

Help put together baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  In March they need help collecting, loading, and sorting for their clothing drive.

May be other opportunities during the year.  

 

Transitional Housing - Jack Flowers                                                

This organization provides temporary shelter and support to homeless families.  Periodically teens could help to move furniture and assist with other projects.

 

Undy Sunday - Nora Jackson (Christian Service Commission)   718-2158

Every October our parish has a collection of new underwear to be donated to families in need. We need help collecting, sorting, and delivering these undies!

   

 

Religious Education Office Volunteer Opportunities

Helping with preschool classes on Sunday mornings.  Helping with Vacation Bible School for 1 week in the summer.

Helping with retreat activities for 3rd and 4th graders for 4 hours on Saturdays.  Also, childcare for parent meetings during selected evenings.

Helping with service projects for 7th and 8th graders on Wednesday evenings during the school year for 1 ˝ hours. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors welcome.

Teens can participate in the vibrant life of our parish in many ways:

Service Projects In the Naperville Area

 

Hesed House   (PADS Program) -  Gesse Hernandez                               897-2156

Not only can you help out here, but you can also contact Gesse regarding other things that can be done in the community to aid the problems of hunger, poverty, and homelessness.  He is willing to work with groups of teens to come up with creative projects that can be done in the community.

 

Habitat For Humanity ( Wheaton ) - Vicky Broberg                              510-3737

Teens must be 16 years or older (due to OSHA regulations) to actually work on a home site, and an adult leader must be present.  All ages can help as volunteers for fundraisers that Habitat runs during the year.  Anyone fourteen and older can do landscaping.  Teens are encouraged to contact the campus chapters of Habitat for Humanity (there is currently one at Naperville Central and one starting up at Naperville North).

Teens are needed to help set up and clean up (there will be a short training session for this).  Teens are also invited to bake sweets.  Beth is the contact for the SSPP group which helps the P.A.D.S. program on the first Wednesday of every month, although there are several sites throughout the area.  Also, tennis shoes and boots are in high demand and anyone willing to take charge of a shoe drive would be greatly appreciated.

Loaves & Fishes - Shirley Eatwell                               355-3663

Teens are needed to help with food sorting and cleaning.  If teens are under 16, an adult must be present.  Volunteers are needed Sundays, noon 2:00 p.m.   Much help is also needed in May for the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive.

 

Hesed House Food Pantry - Mike Woodruff                                  897-2127

Distribution of food occurs from 11am-2pm daily, which may make this project difficult during the school year – but don’t forget about summertime!  Hesed House is also in need of help sorting and preparing food baskets around Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas.

 

Special Olympics - Amy Kaylor                                       377-7250

This program provides year-round training and competition in several sports for kids and adults with mental retardation and related disabilities. Help is needed to set up, referee, officiate, and fundraise for a variety of events (including track and field at North Central College, bowling at Brunswick zone, and aquatics at Nequa Valey H.S.). Ecumenical Adult Care Center - Hope Schamberger                            357-8166

Teens can help with Bingo, walks to the Riverwalk, arts & crafts, and snacks.  Teens are also welcome to share their talents with residents – the center has an organ and piano, as well as space for entertainment such as a play or skit.  Office volunteer opportunities are also available.

 

St. Patrick’s Nursing Center - Gayle Quinn                           416-6565 ext. 528

Helping on the weekends with activities such as bingo, running movies for the residents, holding a coffee and conversation hour, or setting up games are some of the service opportunities offered here.  St. Patrick’s also has an after school program where teens can “adopt” a resident as a grandparent and visit this person every once in a while.

 

DuPage Children’s Museum -  Diane Ernst                            637-8000 ext.4680

Teens can be trained to work with children in the exhibits, or to help the staff in the art studio.  The museum is also in need of some behind the scenes work such as data entry, and other office work that can be done after school.  Groups can also come in to work on special projects such as repair and maintenance of the exhibits.

 

Humane Society - Cherylee VanCleave                         420-8393 ext. 13

Teens (ages 10-17) are invited to join the Humane Society’s junior volunteer program with a parent.  There is a $12 fee for both teens and parents, and participants in this program are expected to give 3 hrs of help per month.  Volunteers will get hands-on experience as well as the chance to help with special events.  Please take note that the number of volunteers is limited, and this program is not always open to new participants. 

Teens 18 and older can apply for the adult volunteer program, which expects a 6 month commitment of 1 hour per week.  Both hands-on opportunities as well as assistance with other projects and office work are available to adult volunteers.

Fundraising or sponsor a parish baby shower for women dealing with crisis pregnancies. Help is also needed to collect new or slightly used clothing and toys for babies 1 yr. old and under.
