Extraordinary Ministers open

In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be a sufficient number of ministers of Holy Communion so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner. Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord.

When the size of the congregation requires it, the celebrant may be assisted by other bishops, priests, or deacons. If such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not present, “the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e., duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed for this purpose. In case of necessity, the priest may also depute suitable faithful for this single occasion (GIRM 162).”

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence.

All ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine. (Based upon Roman Missal Formational Materials provided by the Secretariat for the Liturgy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2010.)

For more information on becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, contact Deacon Michael Crowell at [email protected] or 630-718-2197.

The New Evangelization seeks to deepen the faith and commitment of all Catholics by calling them to a more profound relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ in words and deeds. Distinct but not separate from classical evangelization that seeks to bring the message of Christ to those who have not yet heard it, the New Evangelization, initiated by Pope John Paul II, is a fresh vision of preaching the Gospel for the third millennium. This New Evangelization focuses on: Deepening the faith and commitment of those already baptized, and calling them into a more profound relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ; Calling home Catholics who have left the Church or are not practicing their faith; Calling us to engage and re-evangelize the modern culture, bringing to it the Gospel values; Focus on using modern means of technology and communication in the work of proclaiming the Gospel. For those of us in the Church, then, the New Evangelization means learning about our faith; deepening our spiritual lives; inviting others to the same encounter with Christ, particularly through the sacraments; and bringing our Catholic beliefs to bear in the secular realm. For more resources, see The Fisherman’s Net.
